Justin got called a fraud. Not in so many words, but the message was clear: how can you preach “freedom” in business while you’re grinding harder than ever on a brand-new venture? It stung more than he expected, so instead of brushing it off, he sat with it, and realized the person asking had missed something huge: the difference between a phase and a trap.

In this episode, Justin breaks down why every business goes through an infancy stage that demands hands-on grinding, and how to tell if your own hustle is building toward something or just keeping you stuck. He walks through the real test he uses to separate healthy hard work from being trapped: tactical work vs. strategic work. It’s the same gut-check he used to answer that “fraud” accusation once and for all.

So I got a message the other day. And this person didn't come right out and say this, but the implication was pretty clear. They basically called me a fraud. Here was their point. I sit here and I preach freedom. I talk about how your business should serve you and not the other way around. And yet there I was pouring everything into opening this new business. Long hours, late nights, all in. So their question was basically, what gives? How do you preach freedom while you're grinding even harder than ever? And honestly, it's a fair question. It's a valid question. And it's exactly what we're going to get into on today's episode.

Welcome to the Freedom Blueprint Podcast, the show for home service business leaders who want to build a business that serves them, not the other way around. If you're in the plumbing, AC, electrical, garage door, or anywhere you send a tech to a customer's home, you're in the right place. So whether this is the first time you're here or you've been rolling with me for a while, buckle up because today we're talking about something that hits close to home. Let's get into it.

Working hard and being a slave to your business are two completely different things. Let me say that again. Working hard and being a slave to your business are two totally different things. They're just not the same thing.

Now, here's my confession. That message, it got under my skin a little bit. Because for a second, I thought, maybe they're right. Maybe I am being a hypocrite. I mean, there I was back in the grind doing the very thing I tell other people to build their way out of.

But then I sat with it for a few. And I realized the person asking the question was missing something big. They were missing the concept of phases. Because the grind I'm in right now, it's a choice and it's temporary. And it's building towards something. That's completely different than being trapped.

So let's talk about what's really going on here. Every business goes through phases. You've got the infancy stage, the teenage stage, the maturity stage, and the growth stage. And here's the truth nobody wants to hear. When you're launching something new, whether that's a brand new business or a new product line, if you think you're not going to have to put in the hours and grind, I'm here to tell you you're probably not doing it right. Because that early phase, that's where you're learning new things. That's where you're building systems from scratch. That's where you're creating the processes and procedures that don't exist yet. And that takes you, the leader, being in it, hands-on.

Because here's the thing: every business has systems. Every business has processes. The only question is whether they're intentional or not. And in the infancy stage, if you're not the one shaping them intentionally, they're going to get shaped by accident. And that's a cost you probably can't afford.

So if the grind is normal in the early phase, why does that message sting so much? Why do so many of us feel guilty about working hard? Here's what I think is really going on. Somewhere along the way, we got sold this idea that success is supposed to look like sitting on a beach while the money rolls in. So the second we find ourselves back in the grind, we panic. We think we've failed. We think we did something wrong.

And it goes deeper than that. Because a lot of us came from the grind. We grew up turning wrenches, running calls, working ourselves to the bone just to get here. So when we finally build a little bit of freedom, the last thing we want to do is feel trapped again. That fear is real.

And then there's the loudest voice of all. It's everybody else. It's the guy in your comments. It's the message in your inbox. And honestly, a lot of it's social media. Because let's be real about what social media actually is. It's a highlight reel, not real life. Think about it. How many business owners do you see posting at 3:30, 4 o'clock in the morning when they're grinding it out? Or posting about how they're stressed about payroll coming up, or a bill's coming up and they don't have the money for it? The answer is nobody.

They're not posting the late nights, the hard calls, the problems they're solving behind the scenes. They post the vacations. They post the new truck. They post the wins. So you're out here comparing your behind-the-scenes to everybody else's highlight reel. And when your life doesn't match their picture, you start to question yourself.

But here's what all of this has in common. It's all about how it looks, not about how you're actually building.

So how do you actually fix this? How do you tell the difference between healthy grind and being trapped? Here's the gut check I use. It comes down to the difference between tactical work and strategic work.

Tactical work is the right-now stuff. It's solving today's problems. It's running the service call. It's putting out the fires. It's handling what is right in front of you.

Strategic work is totally different. Strategic work is solving tomorrow's problems today. It's building the systems. It's creating the processes. It's holding an open house to recruit — so you're not just hiring for today, you're building a bench for tomorrow. That's strategic.

So you've got to check yourself and ask, what kind of work am I actually doing? Am I grinding because I'm stuck running all the service calls myself? Or am I grinding because I'm building the systems and setting up the future of this business? Because one of those is a trap. And the other one is an investment with an expiration date.

And here's the other move: name the phase you're in out loud. Tell yourself and tell your team, we're in launch phase right now. This is temporary. This is building the engine. Because when everybody knows it's a phase and not forever, the hard work feels completely different. It feels like progress instead of a prison.

So here's the win when you get this right. When you're intentional about the grind, when you know your phase and you know you're doing the strategic work, two things happen. First, the business wins — you're building something that will actually run without you someday, instead of something that owns you forever. Second, you and your team stop feeling guilty about working hard, because you finally understand the difference between building and being trapped.

Now, let me take you back to that message. The one that basically called me a fraud. Here's what I would say to that person now: You're right that I'm grinding, but I'm not trapped. I'm building. This is a phase, and I chose it, and it has an expiration date. That's the whole point of freedom. Freedom isn't about never working hard. Freedom is about getting to choose when and why you do.

So here's my challenge to you this week. Take an honest look at your own grind. Ask yourself: is the work I'm doing tactical or strategic? Am I stuck or am I building? Because the answer changes everything.

So before you go, here's your one thing to do today: look at your calendar for tomorrow and circle the work that's actually strategic. If you can't find any, that's your wake-up call.

Look, I know how it feels to catch heat for working hard. I've been there this whole last two months. But don't let everybody else's highlight reel make you feel guilty about building something real. You know your phase, you know your why, and that's all that matters.

Now, if this episode hit home for you, do me a favor: share it with another owner who's grinding right now and feeling guilty about it. And if you're not already subscribed to the podcast, go fix that so you don't miss what's coming up next.

Listen, the grind is not the enemy. Being trapped is. So go build the business that serves you. Keep building, keep choosing your phase, and as always, keep crushing it.
