Recorded live from the beach right after the second annual Home Service Hoorah wrapped, Justin and Kristen break down the biggest takeaways from two days built around one thing: hiring.
They walk through the “open house” recruiting process they’ve run for years across markets big and small, then dig into the Facebook and Indeed retargeting trick that got one brand-new plumbing company booked out for two weeks in just three or four days — and pulled 70 people into an office built for a fraction of that. From there, the conversation turns to the growing presence of women on stage and in the trades, and closes with a story from the Blue Angels’ ground CEO about why the team hires for attitude and teamwork over raw skill — and what that means for how you build your own crew.

So this is gonna be a tough one. We're currently recording at the beach. And we just wrapped up the second annual home service hoorah. And I know I know I'm biased. I know you're biased. But man, that felt good.
(:That did feel good. I'm an injustice mid, because when I look over all I see is the pole, the umbrella pole.
(:Okay. Well we can scoot up so we spent the couple of days talking about really being able to recruit people and find people and we really went through the process that we've used for years now. and we we call it a open house. Some people call it recruiting event.
what what you call it doesn't really matter. It's more about that you f you know, kind of follow a process. And have a lot of people that when I talk about it they go, yeah, yeah, yeah. I've done that. I've done that.
(:Or that won't work out.
(:Yeah. And that's fine and all, but truth is it does work. We've done it in small markets, we've done it in large markets, we've done it in lots and lots of markets, and it works perfectly fine. And so
the feedback we got as we went through the whole process of how to do it.
(:We s I mean we spent two days talking about it and when we do events we do the content a little differently. Yeah. Rather than go really wide but shallow. So lots of topics but don't really dig in. We spent the two days narrowing down at the topic and going deep. And I think we sent everybody home with like something they can like run home and implement. And I think they were pretty fired up to do it.
(:Yeah, I mean they could be on the airplane, you know, there's a lot of people that flew here. that they could be implementing this on the way home. And then Jared, Jared went through the whole process of how to create an ad in Meta. And what's cool is so when Jared and I, when when we first showed Jared this this process, he was like, it's a little weird, but I'm gonna try it. I was like, great.
Well Jared obviously is really, really good on social media. Right? Him and his team, I mean he's got a huge following. He understands that part of the business very, very well. I mean, he started running Facebook ads for a brand new plumbing company, and within three or four days, he was booked out for two weeks. Yeah. Like that's that's awesome. But so during the event, he literally walked everybody through exactly how to do it. Now I want to say this,
Here's what I did not know. I had no idea that he was talking about when you post the Facebook, it'll show it to that person like six times. And then it moves on to the next person.
(:yeah, and then it moves on to the next one. Yep,
and shows them six times and then sh goes moves to the next one and shows them six times.
(:Yeah. And then he was syncing it to indeed, which most of us are like, indeed, whatever. But we did that because he does that because then when they think about it after the fact and they Google it, Yeah. There it is. So so I think about you know, systems are never set it and forget it. And I think that's part of the challenge that people have is they always get in this this thing where they feel like it's a set it and forget it or you do it once and that's that's done. That's just not how it works.
So I mean what would that look like to follow that part of the process? So our part of the process we would usually get thirty, forty people in the room.
(:without the technology of Facebook marketing.
(:He he did the first one on a brand new company. He had 70 people there show up. Now let me tell you, his office is not big enough for 70 people. No,
(:And we're not in a huge market.
(:we're in a no, we're Pensacola, man. We're I mean there's a couple hundred thousand people here, but it's not a big market. And it's, I don't know, incredible. And and I really, I really and truly hope that people go home and implement this because it will it will change their business. Yeah.
Because just imagine not having to always be looking for employees. Mm-hmm. Or allowing your employees to hold you hostage anymore because you don't wanna make do what you want them to do because they might leave
(:Yeah, then you have to go through the f finding somebody again. Right.
(:Right.
Any big takeaways you had?
(:I had several wives come up to me over the course of the two days and were really appreciative of the fact that there was a female presence presenting and talking about the industry and teaching because I think that they're
I mean, we are we were the same way when we were younger in businesses. You just don't get to run into the wives or the women behind the the business owners sometimes and a lot of times it's part you know, your partner.
(:I would say all the time it's your partner.
(:Well, I mean like yeah, whether you're if you're the wife of the of the business owner we'll say, sometimes you're in the business and sometimes you're not, but you're still like totally in infant.
(:You're in it, yeah. You're you're probably less like you're hearing more about the bad stuff. Yeah.
(:Yeah,
for for sure. so it was that was pretty cool to be able to have a couple people come up and say like it was refreshing to have 'cause I wasn't the only woman on the stage and we had Ellen Rohr who did a presentation and she's freaking badass and then Cassie Torres from Hi Fi Plumbing got up and shared a little bit and it just it's I think it was just refreshing for them. Yeah. 'cause definitely the industries is a male dominated space.
(:But I do think it's shifting though. I mean I I do think that women are playing a bigger role. You are starting to see more female technicians. N I mean not at a super high pace, but you are starting to see that a little bit where, you know, there's starting to be more and more female
(:I think that they w Yes, yes, definitely. And I think I don't think women are playing a bigger role. I think there's just more of us who are being louder about it.
(:I guess okay, all right.
(:but yeah, so that that was really cool. we asked a question at the very beginning, how many people have ever been to a an event like this? And like almost half the room have never been to an event like this, and almost half the room raised their hand, which that was cool.
(:That was really cool.
(:To for for that many people to never have been to something like this before. And I I
(:It's like no pressure.
(:well yes and I told him from the stage because I knew it was gonna be good.
we put a lot of time and effort and energy into the thought process of the content and all the things and the speakers and and the whole nine yards and I knew it was gonna be good and we've been to a lot of shows and so I think we ruined them. I
(:Yeah.
(:think we ruined them for other events, not gonna lie. so that was cool. Almost none of them had been to Pensacola Beach and this is you wanna talk about a hidden gem. This place is awesome. Literally
(:I mean that's where we are right We're sitting
there's the Gulf of America.
(:Whatever you want to call it.
(:But you know what? I'm gonna No, I'm not. I'll I'll do a video of it, but I don't want to flip the camera around and mess it all up. Okay. But yeah, so if you're hearing any noise.
(:Yeah, it's the ocean. Or the yeah.
(:Or birds.
(:But today is the perfect day of why they call it the Emerald Coast.
(:Yeah. Yeah, water's perfect.
(:So so yes. it was
(:It is a huge investment. And we don't like we don't take that lightly. Like it is a huge investment. we we had a we had a few people there that it was three people in their company and they all were here. Right. Awesome family. I
(:Nothing's getting done while they're
(:mean they shut down their business, right? Flew here.
That's it's always fun to record
(:Fly.
(:on the fly. Stuff just happens. It's fun. they shut down their business and they and they they fly here. They're in a hotel for a couple days. Like it's a it's not a cheap, and that's not even a ticket, right? Like it's it's a it's a expensive investment.
(:And
you're not getting jobs done while you're not there. So there's an opportunity cost there and so so we we don't take that lightly and
(:Because we were in that same seat. Like we've done that. Like we've done that almost like, it's a hell Mary thing.
(:I think that when you go to play this podcast back, you're going to hear like exhaustion in our voices. And I think that that is a testament to how much we put into these things, right? Like
(:Bring bringing the passion. Yeah.
(:for real. Like it's you know, everybody's going home today and we're it's we're tired 'cause it's we put like literally everything we have into these things. but yeah, it was awesome.
(:And some some phenomenal guest speakers.
(:Yes.
(:So we had our friend Steve W okay, so here's the other cool thing. Is the guest speakers for the most part are people that we know in our community that we had come out.
(:Yes, they were yes. They were local. a couple of Ellen wasn't local. however, we had Steve Wilmer who is a motivational leadership speaker and a sales trainer for intro. Yeah,
(:The whole room uncomfortable and I love it.
(:I know. It was awesome. He we he kicked it off. he brought the energy. what a way to my gosh, what a way. Our daughter was there and took a whole page of notes. Yeah. Which is like really cool.
And then one of our other guest speakers was the the
(:Ground CEO for the Blue Angels.
(:Yeah.
He s yes, the ground CEO for the Blue Blue Angels. Basically a second in charge with the first one being the first one in charge is the pilot of the f number one jet. And then he's the Yeah. Well that was his name. Yeah. And then and then John was the main guy on the ground. And
What's impressive about that is that the Blue Angels in any given year, at like sometimes up to half of the pilots are new to the Blue Angels. They're definitely not new to flight, but they're they're new to the Blue Angels and they s they practice a lot. And by the end of the season, they are trying to achieve what's called the Yankee formation. And what that just means is that the wing tip of the side planes when you're looking
At the the delta formation, it's when all four of them are flying in a diamond, and the wing tip of the side guy is over top of the cockpit of the guy in the middle
(:Yeah.
(:to 18 inches above. So that's basically like reach your hand up, right there's the wing of the next plane, and they're going like 800 miles an hour. Okay. So what's impressive about that is you gotta get a whole team of people, including like over a hundred ground.
(:people.
I think you said a hundred and forty something are on the team as a whole, which you know, a lot of times you see the Blue Angels and you're like, there's six airplanes, but there's there's a team of a hundred stuff.
(:Way more than that, right? Supporting all of that.
So in in less than a year, really in the matter of a few weeks, you've got to get everybody synced up so much that you can perform these maneuvers safely. Because it literally is life and death.
(:Yeah.
(:And so, you know, to to have part in what it takes to pull everybody together and get to that level is impressive from a leadership standpoint. And when we talk about hiring and finding team members and how that applies to the Blue Angels, they
They don't hire based on skill. They hire based on attitude. And I don't even know that he used the word attitude. It was like, can we get along with this guy? 'Cause we're gonna be spending what do you say, two hundred over two hundred days with them. if if I'm working nonstop like that with somebody, do I wanna go have a beer with them at the end of the day? Or am I like, my god.
(:Give me a way.
(:Yeah. and they make a lot of decisions based on who's gonna be on the team based on that.
(:See,
for me, I would have thought and I remember asking, so I had John on the podcast, so if you I don't know I don't know what episode it was, but if you look you you can find John Fay is his name. But the thing that impressed me the most or surprised me the most about it is in my head I'm thinking like Top Gun.
Like how they have this whole fly off and this whole thing and that's how you become a blue angel and that's not it at all. They're like it's not always the best pilots. Yeah. It's the best team members. Right. The best teammates. That's who we want to work with. And I think that's pretty cool because you can take you know, you can and average is not a word I would use to describe any of them, but you can take decent pilots and then if they're working together, they become elite pilots by working as a team. I I think it's pretty rad.
(:And and he he was they don't call themselves a team, they call themselves a tribe. And that that I think is like the level up of commitment.
(:Yep. Yeah.
So we're gonna wrap up. We're gonna enjoy the beach. But we're probably gonna continue this conversation. But I'll say this. If you weren't here, you missed you missed out. And we're definitely doing it this sh this coming year. And we're definitely going to do it. I say definitely. We're probably gonna do it in the exact same location. Because it was that
(:It was good. Yeah.
(:but so check it out. Homeservicehoorah.com
check it out. Get your tickets because this year sold out and next year is gonna sell out even faster. So thank you.
